Phalsa is a fast-growing tropical and subtropical plant native to India and Southeast Asia, red to purple when fully ripe. The size of a blueberry is small . Phalsa berries have a pleasant, sweet flavour. It usually starts bearing in mid-summer and harvested daily. The plant tends to have a sprawling habit and reaches about 12-18 feet tall when planted in the ground.The fruits are borne in clusters and turn from light green to purple in colour at maturity and may turn black at ripening on the bushes.


Falsa Berry is delicious fruit. It is also known as black Berry etc. in different parts of India. It is widely cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical climates. The best time to plant a Falsa Berry tree is in the summer when it's warm, as they like lots of sunshine.The ripe fruits are 5-12 mm in diameter.

Steps To Sow Falsa Berry Seeds:

Use a seedling well-drained tray or direct ground.

1. After collecting the seeds, soak them in fungicide water overnight.

2. Sow the seeds on soggy soil 2cm deep and 10cm apart.

3.After sowing the seeds cover the seeds with a mixture of sand and sieved vermiculite.

4. The temperature should vary between 18-30 degree Celsius.

5. Water the soil frequently to keep it moist.

6. Within 20-30 days the seed will sprout.Each bold seeds produce two plants. If possible apart from them.

Although the seed is open pollinated, no changes of the plant and fruits.

Climate and Soil:

It prefers hot and dry environment during fruiting because it is tropical and subtropical fruits. In winter it goes dormant with falling their all the leaves.
Health Benefits:

Phalsa is considered to be antioxidant in nature due to its coloured fruit and juice. Whole fruit is eaten along with the seeds. The mildly acidic fruits are rich in Vitamin A, C and minerals. Fruit contains 55 percent juice with 11-12% TSS and 3% acidity. It is rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamin C.
