Simul Plant: Information and Its uses




                                       Simul plant

Simul plant (in bengali) is commonly known as Semal or shalmali is the kind of tropical or subtropical plant. The plant grows upto an average height of 25 meters, with old trees up to 60 meters.This tree has a straight trunk and its leaves are deciduous in winter. Flowers are having red colour with 5 petals appear in the spring before the new foliage. It produces a capsule which, when ripe, contains white fibres like cotton.When the tree grows upto 8-10 ft tall, the flowering begins.The flowers are 6 to 7 inches long and are up to 7 inches wide.The fruit is a ball like structure, on maturity appears during March and April. These are full of cotton-like fibrous stuff. This substance is used for filling economically priced pillows, quilts, sofas etc. The fruit is cooked and eaten and also pickled.

Uses:

Flowers can be used as chutney, salad, and also cooked as vegetable.Flower paste applied to boils, itches and affected sore. Petal removed from the flower and rest of the part is cooked as vegetable.
Cotton is produced from fruits is used to make pillows, blanket.
Juice prepared from the crushed root is taken in the morning to increase sex in male and clear bowels.The tree extracts a gum. The gum has some value in cigar and ice-cream manufacture, and can be used as a substitute for gum in various industrial processes. It is sweetish, cooling and sedative and helpful in cough medicine.
